Can we change the ups battery backup by ourselves at home? The batteries are critical to the integrity of your UPS system. Most modern UPS systems will perform and monitor short battery tests on a regular basis, however it is also essential to maintain these systems to ensure they will operate correctly when needed.
Changing the internal battery is no big deal and we can easily change it. There are two types of UPS that include Offline and Online UPS. Among the two, it is the off-line UPS that we use at home or at our office and is easy to open. There is only one battery of wattage 500VA or 800VA in the UPS and is of 12 Volts and 12V 7AH rating ups battery.
4 tips for extending UPS battery backup lifetime
(1) Install your UPS in a cool, dry location.
Rated battery capacity is based on a maximum operating temperature of 77° F (25° C). Any variation from this temperature can alter performance and shorten a battery’s life. When installing your UPS, keep in mind that for every 15 degrees above 77. The UPS battery’s expected life is cut in half. Leave at least two inches of space on each side of the unit for proper airflow. DO NOT place the UPS near an open window or high-moisture area.
(2) Perform preventive maintenance.
Without regular maintenance, your UPS device battery may experience heat-generating resistance at the terminals, reduced protection and premature failure. Preventive maintenance extends battery life by preventing loose connections, removing corrosion and identifying bad batteries before they affect your application.
(3) Store replacement batteries properly.
Keep replacement batteries, but you shouldn’t store them for extended periods of time. New batteries can be stored for up to 12 months. If kept too long, they will have a shorter lifespan. To maximize life expectancy, store batteries in a location with a temperature of 50°F (10°C) or below.
(4) Use energy-saving devices.
When connecting devices to your UPS, make sure they are efficient. Devices with low power consumption keep the temperature of your UPS at a manageable level, thus extending its lifespan.
When is the right time to change the battery
In normal conditions, when the Mains supply is cut, your equipment still works for some time due to the battery of the UPS. If your equipment gets OFF when the Mains power is cut, it means your battery is exhausted, and it’s time to change the battery. The normal life of a battery is around 1 – 2 years depending on brand to brand. We will teach you how to change the battery yourself at home and there is no need to call a service engineer.
7 steps for changing the battery
For illustration purposes, we are using 500 VA offline UPS. The steps needed to change the battery will be more or less the same in other similar UPS systems.
1. Open the screws from the back side.
2. After opening the cover, you will see the inner view.
3. You will notice that battery is held on to its position by a clamp, so openning this clamp by removing the screws on both sides.
4. Open the RED and BLACK cables from their thimbles
5. Take out the battery from UPS.
6. Insert New Battery, connect Black (ground) and Red(+12 V ) cables onto battery terminals, and re-mount the battery holding clamp.
7. Close the cover and install the screws opened in step 1.
