Lithium Battery Wake-up Explanation

This feature allows the battery to enter standby mode and automatically power down when it reaches a low voltage or a low state of charge (SOC). When an external power source, such as solar (PV) power or AC power, becomes available—typically the following day—the system automatically exits standby mode. As long as the power source remains stable, the system transitions into its normal operating mode and begins charging the battery. This process is fully automated, requiring no manual intervention. Customers do not need to press a button or restart the system manually. The system seamlessly reactivates and restores itself to standby mode upon detecting the availability of AC or PV power, ensuring hassle-free and uninterrupted operation.

Why Lithium Battery Need to Wake UP?

Lithium-ion batteries can sometimes enter a state called “sleep mode” or “deep discharge mode” when their voltage drops below a certain threshold, typically due to extended periods of disuse or over-discharge. In this state, the battery appears inactive or non-responsive to charging attempts. Here are the reasons why a lithium battery might need to be “woken up”:

Safety Circuit Activation

Most lithium-ion batteries come equipped with a protective circuit to prevent over-discharge. When the voltage drops too low, this circuit cuts off power to prevent damage. The battery needs to be “woken up” by bypassing or gradually raising the voltage above the cut-off threshold so that charging can resume.

Prevention of Over-Discharge Damage

Deep discharge can permanently damage a lithium battery’s cells. The wake-up process is a controlled way of restoring normal operation without stressing the battery’s chemistry.

Cell Balancing

The battery management systems (BMS) can shut off battery cells that are imbalanced. Waking up the battery might allow the system to balance the cells again before it resumes normal operation.

Low Self-Discharge

Lithium-ion batteries have a low self-discharge rate but can still lose charge over time if left unused. In cases of extended storage, they can reach a very low voltage, and waking up is required to initiate charging.
